Dear HSRII readers,

This is a research paper titled “Attributable deaths from smoking in the last 100 years in India”. Simply put, it estimates the total number of cigarettes and bidis manufactured in India over the last 100 years, derives the number of life time smokers (about 190 million lifetime bidi smokers and about 41 million lifetime cigarette smokers). Using an attributable risk fraction for death from smoking derived from an earlier study, this study estimates that about 100 million of these life time smokers will die prematurely. Since the bulk of manufacturing and consumption occurred in the latter part of the last century, the early deaths of these smokers will happen in the first half of this century.
