Barely days after the cancellation of the April 1 deadline for tobacco firms to stamp health warnings over 85% of cigarette packs, the Associated Chambers of Commerce of India (ASSOCHAM) came out firmly in support of the parliamentarian who headed the committee which deferred the deadline and provided much relief to tobacco firms.ASSOCHAM’s support came despite the online and offline condemnation of BJP MP Dilip Kumar for saying there was no proof of the link between cigarettes and cancer, particularly because Kumar is the head of the parliamentary panel on subordinate legislation examining the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003.
